Americans had their weapons at hand when the American colonies were occupied by British Redcoats and the American Minutemen could head to battle instantly. American colonists would not give up their weapons and to do so knew it would end their possibility of becoming an independent and freedom loving country. Sparta would not give up their weapons because they also knew that it meant giving up Sparta. That simply was not going to happen under their watch and the Spartans just like Americans know that to ensure their freedoms they must be able to protect them.
