The 6th rank up in the United States Navy is the PO1 and with it the Petty Officer First Class First There Were Firsts. Why do we reference the Crow? Simply put when a US Navy Sailor achieves 1st class they have earned what is called their Crows which is actuality an Eagle but referred to in the US Navy as a crow.

Petty Officer 1st Class Crow US Navy Challenge Coin

When a 1st Class PO first made made 3rd Class they first began wearing the Crow and now with the display of their crow it is perched on the 3 stripes of a 1st Class United States Petty Officer. The Petty Officer 1st Class Crow US Navy Challenge Coin was crafted because of the importance of this rank in the US Navy. As one of the senior non-commissioned officer the 1st class petty officer is a proven Sailor and one on the path to mater their skills and talents within the US Navy. They are the equivalent to a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.

The challenge coin created for the 1st Class Petty Officer features a flying crow with outstretched wings preparing to grasp at their chevron and land similar to the Crow found on the army of a 3rd class.
