The nickname “Lucky Boat” is also carved into the coin along with its hull number SSN-236. With 12 battle stars from her actions in WW2 they are ornately displayed at the top of the coin. She was the most successful submarine in WW2 with 23 confirmed sinkings. This Gato-Class submarine presently serves as a museum ship in Muskegon, Michigan, and is a National Historic Landmark. Sun rays are seen behind the warship and a deep colorful blue sea completes the scene.
