The Purple Heart. You’ve seen it on license plates, knew it was for troops injured in conflict. But did you know its history? Do you know the long, proud tradition of this great award?

The History of the Purple Heart

The tradition of the Purple Heart began with the birth of this nation. Its forerunner, the Badge of Military Merit, was established by executive order by George Washington in 1782. The Purple Heart was established on February 22, 1932, championed by General Douglas MacArthur, who was also the first recipient. It was awarded to service members wounded in the line of duty since April 5, 1917, the day before the United States entered the First World War.

For the last 84 years, it has been a symbol of pride and sacrifice. It’s been a symbol of honor, of a belief in something greater than oneself. Those who have received it have given blood for their country, and many who have received it did so posthumously.

Since its authorization for issue, 1,910,162 men and women have received this award.

Let that number sink in. The United States is approaching 2 million service members who have been wounded or died in action against the enemy. There are few awards that tell of a greater dedication to this nation than the one we award to our men and women who give their blood for this nation.
