Of all the US Navy battleships at moor during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 the USS Nevada has a pretty remarkable story. She was named after the 36th state and was the lead ship of her class. The USS Nevada was a first in many ways when it came to the advanced technology and configuration of the time. Triple gun mounts, oil verses coal, geared steam turbines for longer ranges and the all or nothing armor principle. She was sister ship to the USS Oklahoma, also present at the time of the attack.
She Got Underway
After such a demoralizing failure and incredible loss of morale after the deliberate attack on Pearl Harbor the USS Nevada was a small bright spot. She managed to get underway during the attack. One torpedo and 6 bombs hit her and she managed to beach herself on the coral ridge inside the harbor. Considering the mounting attack my dive bombers, zeroes, and more she got underway. After waters of the harbor flooded her she slipped from the coal and finally sank. The USS Nevada was later salvaged, refitted and she gained prominence again in the Atlantic fighting at the battles of Attu, Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
