A total of 1,177 crew members were killed, making it the single deadliest incident for the U.S. Navy in its history. The ship remains at the bottom of Pearl Harbor as a war memorial, with the USS Arizona Memorial built above it.

The USS Arizona Memorial is a national monument located at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which serves as a tribute to the 1,177 sailors and Marines who were killed on the USS Arizona during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The memorial is built directly over the remains of the ship and is accessible only by boat. The memorial features a 184-foot-long structure that spans the mid-portion of the sunken battleship, with a small museum and a contemplative area at either end. The names of those killed on the Arizona are engraved on the walls of the memorial. The USS Arizona Memorial is a popular tourist destination, and receives over 1.5 million visitors each year.

The USS Arizona was commissioned in the United States Navy on October 17, 1916, and was the second ship of the Pennsylvania class of battleships. It was built at the New York Navy Yard and was launched on June 19, 1915.

The ship was equipped with a main battery of twelve 14-inch guns, and had a displacement of 32,000 tons. After commissioning, the USS Arizona conducted several training exercises and cruises, including a deployment to Europe in 1919 to participate in the ceremonies marking the end of World War I.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the USS Arizona underwent several modernization overhauls, and was used for training exercises and fleet maneuvers. In 1940, the ship was sent to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where it was based at the time of the surprise attack on December 7, 1941.
