A Shellback is a term used by the United States Navy to refer to sailors who have crossed the equator. The crossing of the equator is a significant event in a sailor’ career, and it is marked by a ceremony called the “Crossing the Line” ceremony, also known as a “Shellback initiation”. For this reason we created the Shellback US Navy Challenge Coin.
The Line Crossing Ceremony is steeped in tradition, and sailors who have not previously crossed the equator are referred to as “polliwogs” during the ceremony.

The ceremony typically includes a variety of rituals and challenges, such as a “King Neptune” figure, who represents the ruler of the seas, and his entourage, who preside over the initiation. Polliwogs are required to perform tasks, answer trivia questions, and participate in other activities to prove their worthiness to become Shellbacks.

At the end of the ceremony, polliwogs are officially initiated as Shellbacks and are given a certificate or other token to commemorate their achievement.
It is also worth noting that this ceremony is also practiced by other countries navy and merchant marine.
The United States Navy Shellback is an important part of US Navy history and tradition.
The “Crossing the Line” or “King Neptune” ceremony is a traditional ritual that takes place on ships of the United States Navy and other navies, as well as merchant marine vessels, when sailors cross the equator for the first time. The ceremony is steeped in tradition, and is meant to mark the passage of a sailor’ career, as well as to build camaraderie and esprit de corps among the crew.
During the ceremony, sailors who have not previously crossed the equator (referred to as “polliwogs”) are initiated into the exclusive community of sailors who have crossed the equator (referred to as “Shellbacks”). The ceremony is presided over by King Neptune and his entourage, which traditionally includes a queen, a court, and various other figures such as a barber, doctor and a devil.
The ceremony typically starts with polliwogs being summoned to appear before King Neptune and his court. Polliwogs are required to perform various tasks and answer trivia questions to prove their worthiness to become Shellbacks. Tasks may include things like crawling through a obstacle course filled with slime, swabbing the deck, or kissing the Royal Baby (a large cut-out of a baby).
Once the polliwogs have completed the tasks, they are officially initiated as Shellbacks, and are given a certificate or other token to commemorate their achievement. The ceremony usually concluded with a party or a feast with the Shellbacks and all crew.
It’s worth noting that the intensity and execution of the ceremony varies from ship to ship, and crew to crew, but the ceremony usually is meant to be a fun and memorable experience.
